As PCC's Senior Communications Manager, Stephen handles all aspects of the organization's public face - the website, social media, e-newsletter, publications, and media relations. He also coordinates PCC's monthly webinars promotion and assists with conferences and their promotion. He holds a degree in journalism from Boston University and has been a communicator for nonprofit organizations for all but one year of his career (that one year was spent as an editor at a national personal-finance magazine published by Consumers Digest). One broad area Stephen has been involved with on and off during his career is international development (alleviating poverty), and, within that area, he has worked for organizations working to end hunger and for those responding to emergencies in developing countries. He began his career in Chicago, working in various positions at the national headquarters of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, including as the communicator for the denomination's largest fundraising program, the World Hunger and Disaster Appeal. Following that, he moved to Geneva, Switzerland, to work in communications for an international church-based disaster-response organization. During that time he did a lot of work and personal travel throughout Europe, Africa and Asia. After that, he spent 18 months in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was a freelance communicator working on projects that involved gathering stories in other parts of Kenya and South Sudan, including at refugee camps. He has worked for various nonprofits in Washington, D.C., since 2009, including Bread for the World, which advocates before Congress for an end to hunger in the U.S. and around the world. Stephen is a general communicator with a wide range of skills to keep the communications operations of nonprofits going but especially enjoys the writing and editing and production aspects of communications.
