Laura Schmidt

As a Private Sector Advocacy Strategist, Laura represents the interests of family physicians to non-government agencies, including insurance companies, employers, and other stakeholders influencing the practice of family medicine. Areas of focus include payment, contracting and administrative simplification. Laura assists AAFP members and constituency chapters to navigate through the complexities of the current healthcare delivery and payment environment and fosters the development of methods and tools to achieve success in possible emerging constructs.Laura has extensive experience in a variety of organizations to develop the necessary knowledge to successfully merge the payer and provider sides of the healthcare equation. Laura started out directing the underwriting and administrative functions of an insurance company, then developed and managed the ongoing operations of a physician-owned managed care company as well as worked with an Independent Physician Association (IPA) in recruitment and contracting. Laura’s background also includes work at a Managing General Underwriter (MGU) as Director of Risk Management and at an Ambulatory Surgical Center as practice manager.Laura’s role at the AAFP affords her the opportunity to use her broad-based industry experience to advocate on behalf of physicians.Laura’s professional credentials include the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), and the Fellow, Life Management Institute, with distinction (FLMI), a program that develops operational expertise in Life and Health insurance companies. She is a graduate of the University of Missouri and has been with the AAFP for over 6 years.
