Week in Review & Monthly Briefing: More to Share About Accountable Care

January 31st: More to Share About Accountable Share
Reminder: National Monthly Briefing Today at 11AM ET!

Dear Members and Friends:

The big news this week comes from Pittsburgh-based health plan Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and the expansion of their medical home pilot. Starting off with just 160 providers, the program now includes over 1,000 providers caring for 170,000 patients. The pilot has already demonstrated significant reductions in hospitalization and readmission rates, and was one of 46 featured in PCPCC's Benefits of Implementing the Patient-Centered Medical Home

Today on our National Monthly Briefing at 11AM we are grateful to feature the expertise of some innovators in Richmond, VA, including Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia and Bon Secours Health System. The two announced a major initiative that pairs new payment models with primary care delivery transformations. We hope you find this presentation valuable as you venture into building your own medical neighborhoods!

Primary Care Goes to Congress

Subcommittee Hearing - 30 Million New Patients and 11 Months to Go: Who Will Provide Their Primary Care?

On Tuesday, January 29th the Senate Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging held a hearing that focused on the primary care conundrum: a workforce shortage with millions of Americans expecting coverage under the ACA. It is estimated that the U.S. health system needs 16,000 more primary care physicians and will only worsen as coverage expands in future years under the Affordable Care Act.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) and chairman of the Subcommittee said one in five sick Americans visits an emergency room for care that should take place in primary care settings.
