Nearly Half of Teens Lack Access to a Medical Home

Nearly 20 percent of adolescents report symptoms of mental health problems, and half of lifetime cases of mental health disorders begin showing symptoms by age 14. However, according to a new study from the UC San Francisco, less than half of teens lack access to a medical home.

Researchers found that 46 percent of adolescents lacked access to a medical home, with even lower rates for lower-income, minority and uninsured youth. Adolescents with depression, anxiety, ADHD, learning disabilities, developmental delays and autism diagnoses all had lower medical home rates than those without mental health conditions.

New Case Study Highlights Colorado Beacon's Health IT Experience

A new case study from the Commonwealth Fund finds that the Colorado Beacon Consortium improved care through the use of advanced health IT. As one of 17 regions participating in the three-year, federally funded Beacon Community Program, the consortium sponsors a learning collaborative and coaching for 51 primary care practices in seven rural counties.

The region’s experience with health IT also offers insights on how community stakeholders can help promote health information exchange to improve care coordination among local “medical neighborhoods.”

Heard on the Hill:
Baucus Out;
Tavenner (Almost?) In

Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) announced his intent to retire this week, after more than three decades in the Senate, and over a decade a decade on the Senate Finance Committee. Baucus played a major role in writing and advocating for the Affordable Care Act, and stunned audiences last week when he told HHS Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, that he thought the law was headed for a ‘‘train wreck.’ More on Baucus' retirement.

In other Committee news, Marilyn Tavenner, acting administrator for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), received a committee vote in favor of her confirmation Tuesday. Tavenner must next be confirmed by the full Senate, but a time frame on that vote is unclear, especially given Sen. Tom Harkins' recent hold on the nomination. She would be the first confirmed agency administrator in 7 years.
