The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), signed into law last year, eliminates the failed Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula, but also fundamentally revamps how Medicare pays physicians. This presentation will offer insight on MACRA with a special focus on the new proposed rule expected to be released this month by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). What's in the proposed rule, and how can we respond to best support advanced primary care? The presentation will also address how MACRA intersects with the new Comprehensive Primary Care Plus model, announced by CMS earlier this month.

Presenters:

Shari Erikson, MPH, serves as Vice President, Governmental and Regulatory Affairs for the American College of Physicians (ACP). In this role, she advocates for ACP positions with federal agencies that have responsibility for implementation of the Affordable Care Act and other federal health reform initiatives. She also directs and collaborates on the development of ACP policies and advocacy strategies in order to influence delivery system and payment reforms, such as Accountable Care Organizations and the patient-centered medical home (PCMH), as well as health insurance-related issues.

Laura Sessums, JD, MD, serves as Director, Division of Advanced Primary Care, at the U.S. Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). At CMMI, she oversees the Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) and CPC+ initiatives. Marci Nielsen, PhD, MPH, President & CEO of the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative, is a seasoned health policy executive with nearly three decades of state, federal, international, and academic experience, including the development and implementation of innovative policies in public and private health care programs.

Join us May 5 to learn about the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) demonstration project to deliver the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program to nearly 8,000 Medicare recipients and the partnership between the Y and AMA to support these efforts. This three-year project led to the March 23 announcement by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that the successful demonstration project has been shown to produce significant cost savings for Medicare participants, marking a critical step for HHS to eventually expand the Diabetes Prevention Program under Medicare for those with prediabetes.

Matt Longjohn, MD, MPH, is the National Health Officer at the YMCA of the USA (Y-USA). He oversees a team of approximately 30 content experts and technical advisors charged with developing evidence-based policies, programs and practices; and then to bringing these resources to national scale through the Y’s 900+ non-profit organizations, 2700 facilities, and 10,000 program sites.
