For the first time in 27 years, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has issued a consensus report on primary care. Implementing High-Quality Primary Care: Rebuilding the Foundation of Health Care emphasizes that, although primary care is the only healthcare component in which an increased supply is associated with better population health and more equitable outcomes, it is inequitably distributed and inadequately supported. Across the country, primary care receives a relatively small proportion of health system resources, it has no federal coordinating capacity or dedicated research support, and its workforce pipeline is shrinking. The report proposes a plan to improve primary care for people in every community through objectives that promote action and recommendations that can be adapted to both national and local needs. Attend this webinar for a brief overview of the national consensus recommendations and a panel discussion with California healthcare experts about how to strengthen primary care in the Golden State. The discussion will address these and other important questions: How do recent national recommendations on access, workforce and training, information technology capacity, measurement, and payment apply in California? How can we catalyze collective action in California to rebuild an equitable primary care foundation for the healthcare system?  How are California leaders held accountable for progress in primary care? What can other states learn from California’s experiences? Speakers include the following experts: Diane Rittenhouse, Mathematica (moderator) Robert Phillips, Center for Professionalism & Value in Health Care, American Board of Family Medicine Foundation; co-chair, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee on Implementing High-Quality Primary Care Palav Babaria, California Department of Health Care Services Alice Chen, Covered California Kathryn Phillips, California Health Care Foundation Richard Seidman, L.A. Care Please note: This webinar will include real-time captioning. Sept2021webinarslider.png     Ask any sports coach about working with a team, and they will tell you there are many considerations, including which skill sets to assemble and how to manage and motivate a group of people toward a common goal. Team-based care is one of the Shared Principles of Primary Care, PCC’s vision for advanced primary care, which more than 350 organizations have embraced, and a necessary feature to achieve comprehensiveness and equity, among other principles. In a practice setting, leaders need to assess how a team meets patients’ needs and consider related logistical, infrastructure and payment frameworks. Who are the players on a primary care team, from physicians, nurses and other clinicians to behavioral health specialists, pharmacists and care coordinators? How can team members play well together and provide high-quality, comprehensive and equitable care for their patients? Who leads the team, and does leadership shift depending upon the context? What is the latest evidence about what contributes to team effectiveness? We’ll explore these questions and more with a diverse panel of experts on team-based care. Cost: free The webinar will be recorded and available on PCC's website within 24 hours following the conclusion of the webinar.

Primary care is the foundation of a strong and effective healthcare system. When primary care is prioritized in our health system, it results in people living longer lives with more equitable outcomes. Systems and organizations built around a core primary care function can deliver higher quality, lower cost, and more equitable care. The TPCC Summit is a space for dialogue and collective learning. Participants from broad and diverse backgrounds across the public health and healthcare spectrum will gather virtually to address the challenges of putting primary care front and center in our healthcare system. You will leave the Summit with a more comprehensive understanding of today's healthcare challenges, best practices, lessons learned, and available resources — feeling supported and more equipped than ever to improve the health of Texans.
