Issue Brief Examines Ongoing Bundled Health Care Payment InitiativesA new issue brief from the Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute (HCI3) assesses the nation’s recent experiences with and trends in bundled payments. Health policy discussions in the United States have increasingly focused on finding alternatives to the predominant fee-for-service model of paying for health care services. One promising alternative is a bundled episode-of-care model where a fixed dollar amount covers a set of services for a defined period of time.In the brief, researchers identify and examine 19 non-federal bundled payment initiatives in detail, highlighting significant growth and activity with the model. The introductory commentary for the brief is also currently featured on the Health Affairs blog. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) was one of the original funders of the development of the PROMETHEUS Payment® methodology highlighted in the brief and continues to work with the project through Aligning Forces for Quality, RWJF’s signature effort to improve the quality of care in the U.S.
