Former NBA star Michael Jordan is donating $7 million to establish two medical clinics in Charlotte, N.C., to help at-risk or underserved communities.
The donation will fund two Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinics in impoverished communities in the city, the Charlotte Hornets, which are owned by Jordan, said in a statement.
The clinics are expected to open in late 2020.
“I am proud to partner with Novant Health to bring critical health services to underserved areas of Charlotte and the thousands of North Carolinians with limited access to health care,” Jordan said in a statement.
“Through my years of working with Novant Health, I have been impressed with their approach and their commitment to the community. It is my hope that these clinics will help provide a brighter and healthier future for the children and families they serve.”
Jordan, a billionaire NBA Hall of Famer and a North Carolina native, has become increasingly vocal on social and political issues in recent years. Last year, he condemned police shootings of African Americans. More recently he defended the rights of professional athletes who kneel in protest during the national anthem.
