Week in Review: On Our Best Behavioral Health

Week in Review: On Our Best Behavioral Health
Thursday, November 7th
Dear Members & Friends:

As we move into the holiday season, it is often a goal for us to be on our "best behavior" as we are tempted with a seemingly endless supply of indulgent treats, lavish meals, and holiday parties. As a reminder to 'stay strong,' we're dedicating the month of November to wellness and prevention.

We'll kick it off this week with the more serious topic of behavioral health. As many of you know, chronic diseases and behavior related conditions affect more than 130 million Americans and account for a staggering 75 percent of national health care spending. In response, patients, clinicians, and policymakers are increasingly collaborating to combat the social and environmental factors that impact health, and develop interventions that best meet the needs of individuals and families. Today's newsletter includes a series of new resources that will help a range of stakeholders -- local governments, practices, employers, and clinicians -- start their journey to integrate primary care and behavioral health.

We'll also highlight population health management during our upcoming webinar on November 12th, featuring Disease Management guru Dr. Jaan Sidorov, as well as on-the-ground experience from Bon Secours Virginia Medical Group. In the meantime, enjoy the great new resources, and we look forward to having you participate this month!

Sincerely,

Marci Nielsen, PhD, MPH

New Prevention Resources for Policymakers and Employers
Health in All Policies Guide:
Public Health Institute's new guide Health in All Policies: A Guide for State and Local Governments provides public leaders practical strategies to improve public health outcomes by using the "health in all policies" framework. This framework seeks to educate public health and non-health leaders about the health, equity, and sustainability consequences of various policy options during the decision-making process.

Cardiovascular Action Steps for Employers:
Million Hearts recently released an action guide that employers can use to improve the cardiovascular health of their workers. Drawn from CDC's Worksite Health ScoreCard, the action steps focus on blood pressure & cholesterol management, tobacco control, nutrition and physical activity. The action guide is part of the initiative's larger goal of preventing one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.

Behavioral Health Integration:
Measure for Measure
As clinicians and practices address behavioral health issues that naturally emerge in a primary care setting, there is a growing need for quality measures to assess patient interventions and strategies.

Recognizing this need, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) published the Integrated Behavioral Health Care Measures Atlas. The Atlas supports primary care teams by presenting a framework for understanding measurement of integrated care; providing a list of existing measures; and organizing the measures by the framework and user goals.

If you missed our Oct. 23rd presentation of this toolkit by Dr. Ben Miller and Dr. Neil Korsen, you can access the slides here. To join PCPCC's Behavioral Health Special Interest Group click here.
