A Sneak Peek at the Evidence!

Our Happy New Year begins with happy news!

Last week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released first-year results from both the Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative and the Multi-Payer Advanced Primary Care Practice Demonstration – two large and important multi-payer primary care initiatives - that showed early reductions in health care cost and unnecessary utilization. This announcement was followed by a commitment from the Secretary of Health and Human Services to increase alternative payment models, like Accountable Care Organizations and bundled payments, as well as innovative care delivery models, like patient-centered medical homes, within Medicare, and in partnership with the private sector. These promising reports are a testament to the hard work and commitment of so many - and represent a positive step forward for the long-term success of the advanced primary care and PCMH movement. Read our statement here.

To complement the recent good news, at a briefing on Capitol Hill tomorrow, the PCPCC will release its annual report titled, The Patient-Centered Medical Home's Impact on Cost and Quality: Review of Evidence 2013-2014. The publication highlights evidence from primary care PCMH initiatives taking place in both public and private markets across the country. The report looks at selected outcomes from 28 peer-reviewed studies, state government evaluations, and industry reports published between September 2013 and November 2014. The results are encouraging and demonstrate the PCMH's positive impact on reducing cost and unnecessary health care utilization.

First Evaluation of CPC Initiative Released
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released promising findings from the Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative. The annual report evaluated the program in its first year and found that it decreased hospital admissions by 2 percent and emergency department visits by 3 percent, contributing to the reduction of expenditures nearly enough to offset care management fees paid by CMS.

Integrating Behavioral Health and Primary Care

The Milbank Memorial Fund recently released a new report titled Integrating Primary Care into Behavioral Health Settings: What Works for Individuals with Serious Mental Illness. The publication aims to better understand the evidence concerning the integration of primary care into behavioral health settings.

It was developed by policymakers for policymakers, especially those seeking to develop policies and programs that support integration of physical health care into behavioral health integration settings.

PCPCC President, Paul Grundy, MD, MPH, will join the Hillcrest Winter CME Update Meeting in Keystone, Colorado on Feb. 1. Then he'll participate in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Board of Directors meeting in Arizona, followed by the 2015 ACGME Annual Educational Conference in California. Follow Paul @Paul_PCPCC to stay in touch!

PCPCC CEO Marci Nielsen, PhD, MPH will kick off the month at the American Board of Family Medicine's Winter Board Meeting. New Map Tools Introduced! 
The PCPCC created a free, downloadable slide presentation to complement the Primary Care Innovations and PCMH Map located on the PCPCC website. The presentation provides a snapshot of outcomes and evidence from patient-centered medical home (PCMH) interventions happening across the country.

A Permanent Solution to SGR: The Time is Now
The House Energy & Commerce Committee held two days of hearings on repealing the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) in Medicare and replacing it with new alternative payment models (APMs) that incentivize value over volume. Dr. Alice Rivlin provides compelling testimony that recommends making PCMH available nationwide and counting them as APMs.
